This granite basin was carved by a left-handed craftsman and probably intended to form the basin of a fountain. (diam.: 5m / weight: 25t). It was originally located 2 km from Bessines (in Lavaugrasse) and was moved in 1963. The village elders claimed that this basin would always contain water, so that in the summer, when it dried out, one could be sure that it would not be long before it rained. Young girls in search of a husband would make a pilgrimage there to walk around its edge seven times.
1 km from the center : take the street "Suzanne Valadon" to the traffic lights, go across to the "Chemin de la Pierre Belle" then straight. The granite basin is on the left.

These small buildings are built of dry stone without any bindings such as mortar or cement using a building technique which hasn't changed in the course of thousands of years. Built from local granite these buildings were very much a part of local life and offered temporary shelter for a shepherd. Most of these shepherds' huts date from the middle of the 19th century.

The « clédier » is a stone building of about ten square meters used to dry chestnuts. It can take various forms: round, square or rectangular and its use was individual or collective. Drying protected the fruits from the cold and moisture, which allowed them to be stored and consumed until early summer. This small heritage is typical of the region. The Fontanelle in Cussac is a very good example. You can enjoy a visit to the village or a relaxing break under the large chestnut trees in the garden of Félibres, behind the church.

Water rises up to ground level and into a basin made of monolithic stone. The pressure is low, but the fountain never dries up and its water has therapeutic properties. In the past, young women would go there to make their ablutions when the moon was in the right phase to ensure that they gave birth to attractive children.
To get there on foot, take the "Chemin du Vieux Pont" to 150 m., the fountain sits right back down the stairs.
